Mackay was (presumably) serving with the British Forces and was seconded to work at NATO. This again presumably led him to the writing of the book on touring the Italian Front, in the "Battleground" series.
We know that he was helped considerably in his narrative about the battlefields by his colleagues at NATO serving with other countries' forces which had, at the time, played a part in the Italian Campaign.
