It is a living record of the author's time at the Front, taken from his own trench diaries. It identifies his feelings with the ordinary soldiers, but the inferno is given reality. Barbusse won the Prix de Goncort for this "novel".
Note: we did consider cataloguing this as fiction, it has been observed that this book says in prose what Wilfrid Owen had to say in poetry. But in the end, it is Barbusse's own story, so that is why it is where it is in the catalogue.
